Situé dans le centre-ville de Saintes, l’ancien hôpital Saint-Louis est un ensemble urbain «hors-normes».
Cette proposition aborde sa revitalisation, à partir de ces particularismes. La démarche a été avant tout d’analyser chaque bâtiment et son potentiel culturel, structurel et spatial pour le réutiliser, ou au contraire libérer et redécouvrir le sol. Chaque bâtiment sauvegardé ou nouvellement construit prend appui sur le site, partout où cela est possible et souhaitable.
La partie nord du site, dense, en hauteur, protégée des regards, s’oppose à la partie sud, plus plane, et ouverte vers la ville, la Charente et le paysage de palu. De même, alors que la partie est du plateau offre un visage patrimonial et se trouve largement inconstructible en raison de la présence des carrières, la partie ouest semble capable d’accueillir des interventions plus contemporaines.
L’emprise au sol est minimale, afin de rendre le domaine public à la nature sauvage. Considérer le bâti comme une ruine au milieu d’herbes sauvages, c’est lui rendre hommage en la faisant découvrir autrement tout en minimisant l’entretien et l’impact écologique. C’est aussi conserver l’identité du site en soulignant le caractère non urbain des relations plein-vide sur le promontoire.
Dans cette optique, l’emprise automobile et les stationnements sont cantonnés au nord du site où l’accès est évident, et où l’impact visuel et sonore est moindre. La circulation piétonne profite de cette ouverture et se prolonge dans le jardin de la Providence.
Le site Saint-Louis s’inscrira dans Saintes, non pas en s’intégrant, mais au contraire en enrichissant la ville existante de ses particularités.
While located in the exact centre of Saintes, the urban pattern of the old Saint-Louis hospital is off norms.
This proposal is looking for a revitalization that would pay tribute to these unique features. The process led to the analysis of each building, looking for its cultural, structural and spatial potentials in order to reuse each of them, or to free space on the ground. Each building, whether new or conserved, relies on the site itself, whenever this is possible and desirable.
The northern part of the site is at the same time high, dense and visually protected, while the southern part is lower, flatter and open to the city, the Charente River and the landscape. As well, whereas the plateau offers a rather patrimonial face on its eastern part while being mostly unconstructible because of underground quarry, its western side seems to be ready for accepting more contemporary interventions.
In order to give the public domain back to wild nature, the site coverage is minimal. To consider the built as a ruin surrounded by weed is to pay tribute to it by letting it be discovered in different ways, while reducing maintenance and ecological footprint. It is also respecting the identity of the plateau by underlining the non-urban character of the specific relationship between built and unbuilt spaces.
For that purpose, car presence and parking are confined to the northern part, where access is easy and sound and visual impacts low. New pedestrian ways are created and continued through the Providence gardens.
The site Saint-Louis finds its place within the city of Saintes, not by merging with its environment, but rather by enriching the city of its own particularities.
